Hello Mustang Families,
Thank you for helping us begin the year so strongly! Students are settling into their routines, engaging in meaningful learning, and finding ways to contribute throughout our school.
Learning Worth Celebrating
Last week, we celebrated International Dot Day, inspired by Peter H. Reynolds’s book The Dot. Debbie Wroe introduced the idea at our K–5 meeting, and our staff helped bring it to life as a schoolwide art experience. Students and staff celebrated creativity, courage, and the willingness to make their mark. It was another wonderful example of how our team shares ideas and works together—perhaps we have a new tradition!
In Melissa Hollister’s fourth-grade classroom, students are building multiplication strategies that help them work efficiently and explain their mathematical thinking. They have also begun reading Gregor the Overlander and observed a demonstration of how tree peonies are grafted.
Chris Moon’s students are already documenting the school year through photography in their Publications/Journalism class. Their early work captures Outdoor School, soccer, and other moments of student life at Trout Lake. Much of the work is student photography, giving students an opportunity to tell our school’s story through their own perspective.
These are just a few examples of the thoughtful work happening throughout our school. We are grateful for the creativity of our staff and the enthusiasm of our students.
Sharing Student Learning and Activities
I would appreciate hearing your thoughts about using photographs of student learning and activities on our school’s social media pages. These photos can help families and community members see the learning, teamwork, and joy that take place throughout our school.
I have sometimes used AI-generated or caricature-style images to protect student privacy. While these provide an alternative, I also recognize that they do not convey the same feeling as photographs of actual school experiences.
We will continue to honor all current student photo permissions. I am also interested in your preferences regarding group photos, individual photos, and images in which students are not identified by name. Please email me at w.beldin@tlschool.net with your thoughts.
Title I Annual Meeting Tuesday
Families are invited to our Annual Title I Meeting on Tuesday, September 22, at 5:00 p.m. in Room 111.
Crystal Lanz will share information about Title I services, school-parent-student compacts, targeted assistance requirements, assessments used to monitor progress, and our family engagement policy. There will also be time for questions.
Open House and BBQ Tuesday
Please join us Tuesday, September 22, from 6:00–7:30 p.m. We will begin together in the gym. Families may visit classrooms between 6:00 and 7:00, followed by time to enjoy dinner together until 7:30.
A special thank you to Lacey Doede and Nancy Horne for the planning and preparation behind our BBQ dinner. Their work will help make this a welcoming evening for our students and families.
We look forward to sharing student work, connecting with families, and welcoming you into our school.
Grade Check and Grades 6–12 Academic Support
The first grade check for students in grades 5–12 will take place Wednesday, September 23. Families are encouraged to review Skyward with their students and contact teachers with questions.
After-School Study Hour is also available:
- Tuesday, 3:15–4:00 p.m. in Mr. Kuh’s classroom
- Thursday, 3:15–4:00 p.m. in Mr. Vincent’s classroom
High School Outdoor School
Due to anticipated Hood River Bridge closures, the high school Outdoor School experience has been moved to Thursday, September 24. Students and families should review the information provided by teachers and come prepared for the day. If you have questions, please contact Dennis Anderson at d.anderson@tlschool.net or call the school office.
The SkillsUSA Launch Meeting originally planned for Thursday will be rescheduled. More information will be shared once a new date is selected.

- Senior Financial Aid Meeting: Thursday, September 24, from 6:00–7:00 p.m. Parents of students in the Class of 2027 are encouraged to attend!
- Geology and Physics Field Trip: Friday, September 25, from 8:20 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
- High School Cheer Recruiting Party: Friday at 4:00 p.m. in the multipurpose room
Looking Ahead: Red Cross Blood Drive
Trout Lake School will host a Red Cross Blood Drive on Tuesday, September 29, from 11:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. aboard the Red Cross bus.
Students interested in donating should visit the office for a parent permission form and reserve a time. Staff and community members may schedule an appointment by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS or visiting RedCrossBlood.org and entering the sponsor code troutlake.
Thank you for the encouragement and support you provide at home. It is visible in the way our students participate, take healthy risks, and care for one another.
