WELCOME TO MATH 6!

Some  of you know me or have seen me around school, and some of you are new here, so let me introduce myself.  My  name is Tina Nakae and though I have lived here in the Trout Lake Valley for many years, I started my journey to become a teacher in California.  I graduated from Humboldt State University with a teaching degree and then for the next 6 years pursued my math endorsement and a masters degree. The funny thing about going to school is that it really reveals how much there is to learn! I have taught in elementary, middle and highschool in many different subjects including; Math (my passion!), PE, reading, history, art, publishing, and English (my other passion!). It's useful to be flexible when you teach in small schools. 

So, what are we going to learn this year? Math 6 is a course that explores the ideas of ratio and proportion, while looking at the multiplication and division of fractions. You will work on the coordinate plane, as well as apply what you know about area, surface area and volume in geometry. Using expressions and equations, we will explore reasoning skills. Take a few minutes to explore your math book to see what's coming. You will also find a homework log with attached worksheets.  Now, let me take a minute here to explain what your day should look like. Monday -Thursday you will have an instructional component and a practice part for each concept. For the instructional part, which could be a Khan video, a Go math video or a reading from the book, you will need to take notes. We will talk more about my expectations for notes the first week. For your practice, you will complete problems from the book or a worksheet.  This is critical to helping you know when you need more assistance.  Assignments and links will be posted each Monday by 8 am. Instruction will last no more than 20 minutes and the practice will be about the same. Plan for 40-50 minutes of math daily. Fridays you will have a quiz, turn in your homework log, and get extra help if needed.  I will have office hours daily from 7:45-8:10 a.m. and 3:05-4 p.m., email (t.nakae@tlschool.net or call me at 509 395 2571.

  • Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.

The Number System

  • Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions.
  • Multiply and divide multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples.
  • Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers.

Expressions and Equations

  • Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions.
  • Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities.
  • Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables.

Geometry

  • Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.

Statistics and Probability

  • Develop understanding of statistical variability.
  • Summarize and describe distributions.

Classroom Expectations

  • Materials:  Spiral notebook,  ruler, pencils, chromebook, earbuds or headphones and a calculator.

  • Classroom schedule:
  • Each day you will complete an ENGAGE activity that will include notes and a PRACTICE assignment in your notebook. The ENGAGE will be either on line or in your textbook and take about 20 minutes. The PRACTICE will be paper/pencil work which will also take about 20 minutes.

  • Attendance  Daily attendance is crucial to your success in this class.  Classroom activities, whether graded or not, are critical to understanding the overall material studied.The school attendance policy for online learning will be followed. Please refer to the materials sent out by the school this year, as policies will differ from previous years.

  • Assessments- 40%
  • Homework, participation and projects- 60%
  • You will be receiving a letter grade based on your completion of work and the understanding you show on quizzes and tests. Homework logs will count for 30% of your grade, as will participation in class work. Quizzes and Tests are 40% and corrections will be accepted for up to one week after it has been returned to you.  You should be using Skyward and Google Classroom regularly to see your grades and missing assignments. LATE WORK: Please make every effort to turn work in on time. If there are circumstances that arise and you will be turning something in late, please contact me.
